The International Diabetes Federation launches new Guideline for Management of Postmeal Glucose
A new guideline to be launched by the International Diabetes Federation calls for a more aggressive approach and sets standards to manage postmeal blood glucose to help optimise diabetes control and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes.
The guideline will assist clinicians and diabetes organizations in developing effective strategies to manage postmeal glucose, utilizing locally available therapies and resources. Topics addressed in the new guideline are hyperglycaemia, treatment strategies and regimens, self monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), and non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies.
Existing global guidelines do not include the management of postmeal glucose.
Diabetes is a leading cause of death in most developed countries, and there is substantial evidence that it is reaching epidemic proportions in many developing and newly industrialized nations.
